Here's How to Stay Motivated With a Simple Formula

Have you heard about the study that asked basketball players to visual themselves making baskets versus actual practicing putting the basketball in the net? Trust me, this is good...

Well, here's a quick summary:

A study conducted by Dr. Biasiotto at the University of Chicago was done where he split people into three groups and tested each group on how many free throws they could make.

He had the first group practice free throws every day for an hour.

The second group just visualized themselves making free throws.

The third group did nothing.

After 30 days, he tested them again.

The first group - who practiced free throws - improved by 24%.

The second group improved by 23% without touching a basketball!!!!

The third group did not improve which was expected.

Pretty impressive right?

From that study, you and I would think the best use of our time would be sitting on the couch visualizing our future. That would be awesome right? Well, maybe not...

This next study completely contradicts that theory...

Gabriel Oettingen, professor at NYU and and University of Hamburg, decided to see how visualization and motivation worked together, i.e. were the students who visualized their success in a positive way naturally more motivated?

She quickly discovered the students who had positively fantasized (i.e. visualized) reported feeling significantly less energized than did students who had negatively fantasized. Less energized equals less motivated.

Here's an excerpt from her book:

People who positively fantasize about the future— and that’s probably all of us— thus put themselves in a double bind. On the one hand, they inadvertently relax and fool their minds into thinking they’ve attained their wishes.

Meanwhile, their dreams lock them cognitively into these same wishes, sustaining their fantasies by avoiding information that might otherwise prompt them to step outside, get some perspective on their wishes, and perhaps resolve to take a different path.

The result all too often is frustration, failure, and, at the extreme, a deep-seated feeling of being stuck. Ahhhh...did you read that?

Let me tell you what I get from this:

When we visualize, we get a big enough HIGH that we aren't actually motivated to pursue our dreams because it kinda feels like we have plus we block out information that we'd need to make better choices because our brain only wants to find things that agree with what we already know.

So if you are scared to take a risk, you will only see things that will prove to you it's scary to take a risk. This is mind-blowing because if you aren't motivated to take action, you won't be able to get what you want out of life.

You won't be able to lose weight, find love or attain wealth. You won't have more ease, more fun or more friends. You will die with a unfulfilled dream. Why?

Because you will stay in the wishing mindset and never move into the action mindset. Action is necessary whether you believe you have to do it all yourself (which you don't) or believe that you co-create with God/Source (which you do) or believe that you need help from others (which is true) or believe that if you just fantasize about it you will receive it (we gotta talk about this one.)

Here's the secret: The Law of Attraction does not guarantee success. And she validates what I've been saying for 20 years: Positive Thinking isn't the answer. It's a great skill for sure, but it can't be the main tool you have in your tool box. More on that later...

What does this have to do with you?

Based on the answers I received from the 1 minute survey "Finish Your Year Strong", the #1 biggest obstacle for most people is... Lack of MOTIVATION!

39% said: I can't seem to stay motivated to make the change stick
22% said: I lack the confidence to take the risks necessary

What the????

With my twenty plus years of experience coaching everything from "I'm sick of being fat" to "find me a husband in one year" to "I want to be a millionaire," you bet I can show you to stay motivated but more important, get results... IF you are committed.

Check out my other articles on motivation:

If you aren't committed to make changes in your life, don't bother reading any more of this blog post. It won't apply to you because yes, I am going to give you the magic MOTIVATIONAL FORMULA Gabriele's 20 years of research discovered, but if you're not committed, you won't use it.

Check out what Sarah has to say about what's possible:

Two years ago I had no confidence in my future and felt like a complete failure.

I always had a dream of opening my own Pilates studio but I didn’t know how and I definitely didn’t have the money. I had done research on how much it would cost to own all the Pilates machines plus pay the local going rate for rent and knew, with the amount of clients I had, I couldn’t make a go of it. It was just too expensive and I didn't believe I could do it.

That is, until I listened to the first Group Coaching Call of Create-A-Year-that-Matters. After that first call, I was so inspired and motivated that not only did I start believing that maybe I could do it, I DID IT!

The very next day after listening to the replay of the first Group Coaching Call, I started calling on some studios and found one that was perfect for me. I had been sitting on this dream for more than a year and truly believed it was not possible.

That was over two years ago. Not only have I been able to afford my rent month after month but I’ve made more money than I ever thought possible plus I am attracting celebrity clients and found my purpose working with clients with severe body pain.

I can’t believe I am saying this but money is no longer an issue for me. I look at my life now and am so grateful that I decided to quit stalling, take the risk and sign up for the Create-A-Year-that-Matters Course. I can say with confidence that signing up for Create-A-Year-that-Matters was the best decision of my life.

Sarah Manley, The Body Lab LA

I just saw Sarah and her business is booming (she has the most dreamy celebrity client - super famous movie star) and her smile (and confidence) are bigger than ever.

That's what I want for you: You living your dream now!

And I am going to do whatever I can to bring your dream closer to reality.

So what is your dream?

In my last survey I asked the question:
What is the #1 area of your life you want to change this year?

34% said: Health and well being
22% said: Love and relationships
Vocation, Purpose, Wealth and Finances are virtually tied: 18% and 17%
That's pretty darn clear.

Health first. Love second. Money and Purpose follow.

Makes sense. We've all heard the sayings: "Without health, you've got nothing" and "Love makes the world go round." But how about if we work on all three this year - health, love and money - and make sure you not only feel loved but also have enough money to do what's calling you and you have the health that is your birthright?

We can do that together.

But just like Gabriele is teaching us, you don't want to wish our life away or, in her words "fantasize" positively because it will squash your motivation because in a weird way, the "fantasizing or visualization" gives you the feeling you're taking action, but in reality, you aren't.

Let me share a MOTIVATION Formula. If you want to get and stay motivated, you gotta learn this formula.

It's called WOOP and it's producing sick results. (Sick as in AWESOME results.)
WOOP works for health, love, confidence, anything. She has been studying this stuff for decades, literally, and she has PROOF that it works. (Love that!)
Here it is: WOOP

WOOP
W = Wish
O = Outcome
O = Obstacle
P = Plan (overcome, prevent, seize opportunity)

You write it out every day like this:

Today's Wish:
Best Outcome:
Obstacle:
Plan:
