In Honor of National Relaxation Day

Date Published: Aug 15, 2014

In honor of National Relaxation Day, it’s time to stop, rest and relax.

Do any of those words sound familiar to you? For most of us, the idea of “resting our way to the top” just doesn’t seem to make sense, yet rest may be the only way we will reach the summit.

With a packed schedule and so much to do, there seems to be little time to rest, especially in this age of instant communication. I mean, aren’t we supposed to be rolling in productivity because we are so efficient? (cough, cough, hack, hack)

Resting??? I don’t think so.

I have a confession (but don’t tell anyone): Down time sounds pretty good to me.

What I have learned is that when I integrate relaxation into my daily life my engine runs smoother. I am able to handle the ups and downs of life with more ease.

When I push myself beyond my physical ability, I usually end up in crisis and needing a much longer break to recover from the self-abuse.

That is why my risk this year is to slow life down. I am good at fast but slow brings up all of my “stuff.”

I feel unworthy, lazy or stupid. I think people will have poor opinions of me and think I suck.

But this is what keeps me committed to this rest kick, when I operate from a restful place, I am more creative, more efficient, and my brain works better.

When I am relaxed, challenges fall away and other people’s stress has no effect on me. When I stop myself from constant activity, I pay attention to the internal signals that are guiding me to the next place I need to go. Things happen quicker. To the brain it makes no sense, but the results are in the pudding. Integrated rest produces results.

It is a huge risk for me to stop, rest and relax. How about you?

Do you stop and smell the flowers? Do you include rest in your day? Do you sleep enough? Can you be relaxed no matter what the circumstances are around you? Do you ever stop your activity to enjoy your loved ones, a hobby or quiet time with yourself?

If the words “I’m tired” regularly fall off your tongue it is time to alter that. Instead, substitute “I am now going to relax.” I dare you.

Next time you are tired, stop. Stop wherever you are and ask yourself, “If this so-important-activity-I-think-I-am-going-to-die-if-it-doesn’t-get-done does not get done what will happen?”

If it is not life threatening then take a five minute breather. Soak in that soothing Pinterest image on your laptop. Wear clothes that lean toward comfort. Put a fountain in your home. Buy an aquarium and watch the fish. Take a walk and pay attention to the trees, sky and the like.

Think of yourself as a high priced Maserati. You need to be filled up before you will run at optimum performance. Part of maintaining your engine is rest.

Repeat after me; “It is okay to stop. I give myself permission to rest. Relaxation is the best thing I can do right now for my long-term success.” And then do it.

REST! I dare you!
