Completing a life coaching certification could completely alter the trajectory of your life, just as becoming a Life Coach changed mine. I never imagined this is where I would end up, but I couldn’t be prouder of the journey of growth I have taken to get to where I am today. I am truly grateful that I am able to dedicate my life to helping others live fearlessly

For decades, the Fearless Living Institute has helped people just like you unleash their passion for guiding others by finding their purpose. In that time, I’ve developed what’s been called “The Ivy League of Life Coach Training.” My Life Coach Certification Program (LCCP) provides extensive training based on my life’s work—bringing life coaching into the world. I've been called the Original Life Coach and even, don’t laugh now, the Mother of Life Coaching, and in the press, I was named “America's Favorite Life Coach.” ☺️

When I started my coaching business back in 1995, the life coaching industry didn’t exist as it does today. There was no mainstream form for life coaching back then—it was only known to high-achievers and those with big pocketbooks. Each year, the coaching industry grows and it becomes more accessible to everyday people. Today, life coaching is for anyone who wants to live the life their soul intended™.

The great news for you is that you don’t need to pave your own way to become a successful Life Coach. There are so many resources out there for Coaches of all levels of experience as well as impactful coaching certification programs that will jumpstart your coaching career.

So, what is a Life Coach, and how can you get started? This post will walk you through everything you need to know.

What Is Life Coaching?

Professional Life Coaches help their clients succeed. They work with you to move past your limitations, so you can reach your full potential. This can mean a number of different mentoring approaches depending on a person’s goals, desires, and wildest dreams, as well as perceived limitations, such as lack of confidence, negative thoughts, and, our specialty, fear.

It doesn’t matter what the official title is, all great Coaches are, at heart, Life Coaches. Let me tell you a story about one of my Certified Fearless Living Coaches (CFLCs).

Val decided her coaching niche would be working with entrepreneurs and was convinced she didn’t need her life coaching skills anymore because she was now a Business Coach. Within months, she reached out letting me know that every business problem she encountered was really a life problem. It was her life coaching skills that helped her clients get past their fears and triple their income, not the strategies she learned from her business coaching program.

If you want to help your client increase their emotional regulation, reframe how they see their problems, and befriend their fears, gaining Life Coach experience is crucial.

Because just like Val discovered, great Coaches know the importance of learning and practicing life coaching skills. Our Certified Fearless Living Coaches specialize in helping people pinpoint and refocus fear—the thing that holds anyone back from meaningful progress and fulfillment. We believe, when it gets down to it, fear is what holds anyone and everyone back from living the life their soul intended™.

A Life Coach helps others:

  • Move past what’s holding them back
  • Build self-trust and self-love
  • Overcome limiting beliefs
  • Set and maintain boundaries
  • Increase emotional management
  • Understand the power of thoughts
  • Achieve their own life goals
  • Prioritize personal wellness
  • Make a career change
  • Find a balance between work and life
  • Attain fulfillment and meaning
  • Build self-confidence
  • Prioritize happiness
  • Conquer self-doubt
  • Improve mental health
  • Find satisfaction in relationships
  • Move past pain
  • Create a legacy
  • Build new habits
  • Awaken a vision
  • Gain courage to take risks
  • Withstand a crisis

The potential is endless! It all depends on the specific needs of the client you are working with.

Learn more in my article, What Is a Life Coach And What Do They Do?

And here at Fearless Living Institute, we believe any or all of those goals can only be permanently achieved by including, and moving past, the fear that’s been hiding, holding back, or sabotaging your ability to succeed. That’s why we don’t avoid fear, we embrace it, and more importantly, show our clients how to befriend it and gain mastery over it.

What is a Life Coaching Certification?

A life coaching certification is a key step in your journey to becoming a successful Life Coach. It will help you fast-track your career in a way that was never possible before the industry grew to what it is today.

By achieving a life coaching certification, you gain the experience, tools, resources, network, and confidence you need to advance your life coaching career. Plus, coaching skills are the number one requested skill when seeking corporate advancement, whether that’s changing companies, asking for a raise, or seeking a title upgrade. I bet you can see how you absolutely need to gain coaching experience before you can progress your career. A reputable life coaching certification will provide one-on-one mentoring, client hours, a network to rely on, and resources to launch and grow your business.

The length, cost, and focus of the certification vary depending on the life coach training program you choose. Some life coaching certifications provide specializations, while others focus on previous coaching experience—the best ones require one-on-one coaching practice and mentoring.

Let’s learn how to become a Life Coach with a reputable certification.

How To Become a Certified Life Coach

Pursuing a career as a Life Coach is a fulfilling journey that allows you to dedicate your life to supporting others through their biggest and, at times, most challenging problems and experiences. It’s a gratifying path for people with big hearts and a desire to continue learning life’s lessons proactively.

Below is a preview of the process and some of the steps you’ll need to take in order to become an impactful Life Coach.

To become a Certified Life Coach, your next steps are:

  1. Discover if Life Coaching Is Right for You
  2. Acquire Life Coach Training
  3. Earn a Life Coaching Certification
  4. Grow Your Coaching Business

This is just a small overview of what it will take. There's lots of work within each step, and each Life Coach will have a different journey. It will take longer than a weekend or a few months to become well trained, but it’s a worthwhile and super gratifying process! The road will be different for each person you have the privilege of coaching, which means it takes lots of awareness, dedication, and practice to hone your skills.

1. Discover if Life Coaching Is Right for You

To become a Certified Life Coach, you first need to learn more about the process and whether or not coaching is right for you. In my experience, the people best suited for life coaching are those with gigantic hearts who care about other people. To make a profound difference in people’s lives, you need to be a kind, authentic, and passionate Coach who truly wants to help those around them.

Coaching may be right for you if:

  • You love to learn and grow.
  • You'd like to set your own work schedule.
  • You’d like to determine how much money you’d make.
  • You have gratitude for what you learned during hard times.
  • You like the idea of running your own business.
  • You dream of finding purpose in your work.
  • You’re a good listener.

Take my quiz to find out if becoming a Life Coach is right for you. It will ask you simple questions to see if you have what it takes to begin changing lives—and it takes less than two minutes!

2. Acquire Life Coach Training

There’s a wealth of online resources available to aspiring Life Coaches, such as articles, webinars, podcasts, books, and training, including the Fearless Living Training Program, which will prepare you for your life coaching certification.

If you’re interested in learning more about professional coaching and how to become the best Coach you can be, I recommend tuning in to my Master Coach Mindset™ Podcast. There are dozens of episodes that will help you fine-tune your coaching skills and expand your coaching career. I also recommend you grab “The Perfect Coaching Session Framework,” which has step-by-step instructions on how to structure a successful coaching session.

Now, you do need to dig deep, learn about yourself, and master your own fears. But the only way to call yourself a professional Life Coach is attending, and graduating from, a qualified Life Coach Certification Program. Certification will give you some awesome cred, and it will also ensure you have the experience needed and are fully prepared to jump into the industry.

Trust me, as someone who paved the way alone, you want to make the most of all of the resources available to you.

Do your homework to find the best coaching certification program for you. Do not base it on tuition cost or how long the program is. Instead, evaluate it on the three things that are required to help you be your best: coaching skills, real clients with real problems, and mentor supervision. We’ll cover what to specifically look for in a coaching certification program further below.

3. Earn a Life Coaching Certification

A life coaching certification will give you the tools and experience you need to become a professional certified Coach. You need a comprehensive training program, mentor sessions, and practice with real-life clients. A reputable certification program will fast-track your career so that you can begin building your business and coaching with confidence.

Carefully consider what your coaching goals are and what a program offers before choosing the certification that’s right for you. One-on-one coaching practice is extremely important to becoming a successful Coach because you need to learn from real-life coaching experience. You need practice, and you need to hone your skills before you begin guiding others.

I’m super proud that the Fearless Living Life Coach Certification Program (LCCP) is fantatical about one-on-one mentorship sessions. Sadly, peer mentoring, not one-on-one mentoring, is the norm for most coaching programs. We believe that mentorship from someone who's experienced (and trained) is an invaluable part of teaching students what it's really like to lead coaching sessions. Working with a mentor is a must if you want to trust yourself and your ability to change someone’s life. This is why in the LCCP, you’ll receive a minimum of eighteen one-on-one mentor sessions—the most in the industry!

Your coaching education must provide a combination of industry-leading training, mentorship, and a coaching community you can use to build your career.

4. Grow Your Coaching Business

After achieving a life coaching certification, I know you’ll be excited to put your focus on developing your life coaching business. The second quickest way to success is discovering your own unique niche and coaching path in order to stand out in a growing industry. It’s great that the industry is growing, but that means you need to figure out how to stand out. What can you offer that other Coaches don’t? What makes you different? What makes you uniquely qualified to mentor someone else’s journey?

Don’t worry if you’re unsure what your niche could be or what makes you unique. Most reputable certification programs help you figure that out while you’re studying to become a professional Coach.

The practice, as well as the connections you make achieving your certification, will support you in discovering your niche as you begin coaching clients and expanding your coaching network. The real celebration begins when you transition to your very first paid client.

Make sure you follow my Master Coach Mindset™ Podcast. The resources I share will level-up your skills, make you a better Coach, and show you how to establish your own coaching business.

What To Look for in a Coaching Program

Life coaching certification programs are not all alike, which means it’s up to you to discern the reputable programs from the gimmicks. You also need to choose which one is best for you based on the style and format of the program, as well as your career goals.

The Best Life Coach Certification Programs:

  • Provide a comprehensive coaching experience
  • Emphasize coaching skills as well as proprietary content
  • Teach practical and actionable skills
  • Are well-known across the life coaching industry
  • Have many positive reviews and success stories
  • Provide a coaching program that fits your lifestyle
  • Offer coaching sessions with practical training
  • Require one-on-one mentor coach sessions
  • Support you to work with real clients with real problems
  • Provide exclusive lifetime access to a network of like-minded Life Coaches

How do you know if a certification program is qualified?

Here are the top three things to look for in a life coaching certification program.

1. Does the certification program focus on coaching skills?

Shockingly, most certification programs provide a lot of fantastic content (so much fun to watch the educational videos), but they do not train their Coaches on acquiring the skills needed to support their clients to execute that same content.

In fact, the number one question other Coaches ask me is, “how do I get my clients to do their homework?” To get a client to do their homework or to switch a mindset permanently, you need coaching skills.

Think of coaching skills as the glue that holds your session together—the connective tissue that the Coach uses to adjust and build a new reality for their client.

Coaching skills are your secret weapon to becoming an on-demand Coach. Without coaching skills, you will not be able to support your client past what’s holding them back, so ensure any certification program you’re considering has a strong focus on teaching coaching skills—what we at Fearless Living call the “art of coaching.”

One more benefit of coaching skills? You will be able to coach anyone, anywhere, about anything. Talk about empowering!

In each module of our Fearless Living Life Coach Certification Program, we focus on coaching skills because we know it’s the ultimate key and the quickest way to your success.

2. Does the certification program require you to work with actual clients?

Sadly, most certification programs do not emphasize working with actual clients. Instead, most programs encourage you to do peer coaching, which means working with a fellow student in the same program.

Personally, that’s never made sense to me. If I’m coaching someone learning the same things I am, don’t they already know what I’m going to say and what the material is? Are your clients going to be from that same program you are? I doubt it.

The only way to build real confidence in your coaching ability is by coaching real clients while in a life coach certification program that requires mentor supervision.

Our Fearless Living Life Coach Certification Program requires that a student coach a minimum of seventy-five hours with at least five people who are new to Fearless Living. This ensures you know how to use your coaching skills and won’t simply regurgitate content.

3. Does the certification program give you access to one-on-one mentoring?

Imagine someone going to school to become a doctor, counselor, or massage therapist but never having anyone check their work as they learn the material? Instead, that person watched videos on how to do surgery, listened to audios about the change process, or read a report on how different parts of the body respond to touch.

Would you want that doctor, counselor, or massage therapist to be the one overseeing your health?

Didn't think so. But that lack of one-on-one mentoring is what you can expect from the coaching industry.

In comparison, in California, marriage and family therapists need three-thousand supervised client hours. But to become a professional Coach across the world? Zilch.

Now, many (not all) certification programs provide group mentoring, but that does not give you the personal attention and feedback you need to become the best Coach you can be. Some programs do require (or suggest) three mentor sessions, but you usually pay extra for those.

Impactful mentor supervision means that the mentor listens to a recording of your client's coaching session and gives you relevant feedback on improving your coaching abilities. Plus, they are helping you refine and embody the tools and content needed to give you the confidence to thrive as a Professional Coach.

Most beginning Coaches think their coaching business is going nowhere because their marketing isn't quite right when it is more frequently their lack of confidence in their coaching skills. And that's because they have not received the support, guidance, and encouragement in one-on-one sessions with a Mentor.

Mentors are invaluable. The relationship you develop with them is sacred and lasts for a lifetime.

The Fearless Living Life Coach Certification Program requires mentor supervision—the most in the world. You will work with your mentor twice a month while studying the content and practicing the skills to become the professional Certified Fearless Living Coach everyone wants.

Then, take the first step to getting your certification by answering a few important questions. Next, you’ll be able to schedule a clarity call with a Certified Fearless Living Coach at a time that works best for you. Take the leap! It’s time to discover your life purpose.
